Bengaluru: Former Chief Minister of Kerala, senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy (79) has passed away. Oommen Chandy, who was suffering from cancer, was admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru on February 12. However, the treatment was ineffective and he breathed his last on July 18. Oommen Chandy’s death was announced by Kerala Congress State President K. Natrajan, who has confirmed through Twitter. Kerala incumbent CM Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of Oommen Chandy through a tweet.
Oommen Chandy was born on October 31, 1943 in Kumarakom, Kottayam District, Kerala. After completing his secondary education at St. George’s School, Puthupalli, he attended CMS College, Kottayam and St. Berchman’s College, Changanassery. He completed LLB from Government Law College, Ernakulam.
He made his political debut through Kerala Student Union and became the State President of Kerala Student Union in 1967. Thus, Oommen Chandy, who was attracted to politics during his student life, started his political career through the Congress and became the State President of the Youth Congress in 1969.
Oommen Chandy was the Chief Minister of Kerala from 2004 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2016. Oomman Chandy had won the assembly election for the first time in 1970 from the Puthupally constituency.
Omman Chandy was honoured with the United Nations Public Service Award in 2013 for his efforts to prevent corruption in the public service in the Asia-Pacific region.
