Mudhol hounds, a ‘desi’ (indigenous) breed of dogs is now a part the Special Protection Group (SPG) squad. This squad along with hound forms part of security to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The breed is named after the erstwhile princely state of Mudhol. It is the first Indian dog to be commissioned into the Army. It is also in the race to become the first indigenous breed to be part of the SPG.
The selection on the hound was personally taken care of by the team of PM’s security personnel.
Now, let’s look at the characteristics of the now famous Mudhol hound.
•Their lanky body structure makes them an excellent choice for hunting and guarding.
• The dogs are fast runners and can beat even the fastest runner of all times if given a chance.
• They have sharp vision and keen sense of smell, which adds to the attribute required for a hunting/security dog.
•Mudhols are extremely brave and loyal beings.
Such agile Mudhol hounds are believed to have been bred first by Raja Malojirao Ghorpade of the erstwhile Deccan kingdom of Mudhol. Further, they are very well suited for tropical climates, and not very well adept at handling cold weather conditions.
