With the raining lashing out and the weather turning really chilly, we are bound to catch a cold, develop a cough or fever. Especially children, as their immunity is lower comparatively. And I have noticed, after Covid – 19, people have lower immunity. Usually, people pop a tablet and immediately recover, but what we do not know is the tablet doesn’t kill the infectious germs, rather puts it to sleep to come back later, also this one tablet stays in our body for a long time and causes unnoticeable damage.
While there is no sure shot home remedy, but some of these methods can help subside the cold or cough and eventually you can completely recover.
Honey: My go to guru for the cough. A spoon of honey with a dash of pepper works for me. Honey is said to have antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.
Ginger: I love my tea, with some crushed or sliced ginger. It helps ease a sore throat. Ginger has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
Tulsi: The queen of herbs. I simply chew a few leaves or a add a few in my tea. Tulsi boots our immune system and works towards producing antibodies, that helps prevent infections.
Salt water: Gargling with salt water has always helped me with itchy throat.
Giloy: In Hindi it is called Amrita or Guduchi. I do not have the plant, which is said to have anti-inflammatory properties that helps manage allergic reactions caused due to pollution or pollen. I use it in the form of supplement and it has sure helped reduce my cough.
Essential oils: A few drops of tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil in the diffuser/steamer has worked wonders on my blocked nose and headaches. One can also add then in their bath.
These are remedies that have helped me recover from bouts of cough and severe cold. It will take more time than allopathy medicine to work but it has long lasting effect and is not harmful to the body. It may or may not work for a few. In very severe cases it is best to consult the doctor.
