Have you ever wondered how did the ‘pen’ which we use in writing emerged? What was the earlier forms of methods used pre-evolution of a pen? It was not until industrial revolution, pen which we use in today’s world saw its invention.
But as per the history from 3200 BC the pen has been in use to write. It was from Bamboo reed to quill and later the ball point pen of the day was invented. Ancient Egyptian people wrote using a thick paper like material known as papyrus.
Now to write on this they were in need of a material and so they began the usage of reed pens. Reed pens are made by cutting bamboo into particular shapes. The papyrus and the invention of the ink encouraged the reed pen usage, says history.
However, the next was quills. The feathers of swans and goose were used to write down. The picture of writing on leaves using feather and a small ink pot by the side are certain common pictures which we come across when watching Panchatantra tales or any form of folk tales. And it was post quills, our generation owned nib pointed pens and thus we saw its existence.
Industrial revolution brought in revolution in various forms. It is said that John Mitchell was behind producing steel nibs in mass. However, a great contribution of making writing easy with a pen goes to Industrial revolution in England, in spite all the drain of wealth it caused to our land, India.
