Eminent mathematician and educationist, Dr. Mangala Narlikar, known for her exceptional work in advanced mathematics and her ability to communicate complex concepts, has passed away at 80. The esteemed scholar, who was also the wife of noted astrophysicist Dr. Jayant Narlikar, breathed her last at her residence in Pune, Maharashtra, after bravely battling cancer for several months.
Dr. Mangala Narlikar started her academic career at Mumbai University, where she also earned her post-graduate degree. She excelled because of her love of mathematics and went on to hold positions of increasing responsibility at the Mumbai-based Institute of Fundamental Research’s Mathematics School, where she also taught the subject.
Upon returning to India with her husband, Dr. Narlikar joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and taught at the University of Bombay. Her dedication to education extended to authoring several books in English and Marathi, including A Cosmic Adventure, An Easy Access to Basic Mathematics (a book for school students), and Ganit Gappa (Part 1 and 2), among others.
In 1989, Dr. Mangala Narlikar moved to Pune, where she became part of the mathematics department at the University of Pune (now known as Savitribai Phule Pune University). Her contributions to the field of mathematics and education have left a lasting impact on many generations, making her a beloved figure in the academic community.
The final rites of this remarkable mathematician took place at Vaikunth crematorium. Dr. Mangala Jayant Narlikar’s legacy will be remembered by her husband, three daughters, five grandchildren, and the countless students she inspired throughout her illustrious career.
