Four years have passed since the historic abrogation of Article 370 in India, and the impact of this momentous decision is now evident. For decades, Jammu and Kashmir had struggled with challenges posed by separatism and terrorism, but today, the region stands at the precipice of destiny-altering change, driven by the collective vision of a new India.
Article 370 and Article 35A were once weaponised by separatists and pro-Pakistan elements to fuel dissent and hinder J&K’s integration with India. These provisions denied basic rights to women, transgender individuals, Dalits, and labourers, fostering a sense of exclusion and injustice. With the repeal of these Articles, the region has been gradually breaking free from the shackles of terrorism and witnessing the rise of sustainable growth and development.
In the years since the abrogation, there have been some positive developments in Jammu and Kashmir. The region has seen an increase in investment, and there has been some progress on the development of infrastructure.
Since August 5, 2019, a variety of development projects has been launched, including the 870-metrs-long T-5 tunnel at Panthyal in Ramban district. The 345-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) with its 38 tunnels, including the world’s highest Chenab Bridge in Dharot area, promises to be a game-changer for the region’s connectivity.
The government has also made some progress on the development of infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. New roads, bridges, and airports have been built, and there has been an expansion of the power grid. Moreover, the recent G20 tourism meet was held at Kashmir.
Tourism, a vital sector for J&K, is witnessing a remarkable surge, with over 1.2 crore tourists having visited the region by June this year, poised to surpass last year’s record of 1.8 crore. Stability has become synonymous with prosperity.
One of the most significant changes since the abrogation of Article 370 has been the increase in investment in the region. The Indian Government has announced a number of initiatives to boost economic development in Jammu and Kashmir, and there has been a significant influx of private investment. For instance, the Baramulla (Varmul) and Handwara cities got movie theaters after 33 years.
The delimitation has addressed the historical imbalance between Jammu and Kashmir by ensuring fair representation in the assembly. While Jammu’s assembly constituencies increased to 43 from 37, Kashmir’s count went up to 47 from 46, providing equitable political representation. Additionally, seats have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes, creating a level playing field.
The domicile policy has crucially brought a sense of belonging and empowerment to millions of people. More than 61 lakh domicile certificates have been issued, ensuring that people have access to citizenship rights, property ownership, voting, and government employment.
However, as the region witnesses progress, certain vested interests attempt to sow seeds of discord. Lobbies and legacy parties, which once held political monopolies, raise unfounded conspiracy theories about demographic shifts. Yet, the government remains committed to a democratic and developmental approach.
The transformational impact of the abrogation of Article 370 is evident in reduced incidents of stone-pelting, and terrorism. Security forces’ decisive actions, along with strong NIA interventions, have contributed to a significant decline in stone-pelting incidents, which is crucial for restoring peace.
While there have been challenges, including targeted killings and cross-border infiltration, the government’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding the people and maintaining security is unwavering.
One just cannot ignore the immense potential and progress unfolding in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. It has paved the way for a brighter future towards a united, peaceful, and prosperous India.
