Steps are being taken to introduce free cab rides for party-goers to prevent drunken driving and fatal accidents. As part of this, a pilot programme will be launched in 6 nightclubs in cities including Puglia, Tuscany and Veneto by the end of September.
Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini will fund this unusual project. Salvini, now known as X, posted on Twitter: “Free taxi rides at the end of the night for drunkards”.
The main objective of the idea of providing free car service to those who are under the influence of alcohol is to reduce the number of accidents caused by drunken driving, the country’s officials said.
Though there are many laws in force like hefty fines for drunken driving, none of these have helped in this regard.
The Italian Government has decided to implement this unique idea to reduce accidents caused by alcohol consumption and will start testing it next month. This new idea of the Italian Government has received a good response from the country’s public. According to a 2020 report by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), drunken driving is a serious problem in Italy. Young people in the country are driving heavily under the influence of alcohol. According to the nightclub owners operating in the country, they are very happy that the Government of the country has finally thought a little bit about them.
This is indeed an effort to be appreciated as people come here to have fun and by coming here they forget their problems for a while. They often drink too much alcohol because of the high level of enthusiasm. The free taxi service provided by the Government will help those travelling on the road to go home safely, they noted.
