The Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library (PMML) Society will officially replace the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) from August 14, 2023. The goal of this transformation is to demonstrate how the society has become more democratic and inclusive. PMML Vice-Chairman A Surya Prakash, who also shared the news on social media, acknowledged the name change.
During a special meeting of the NMML Society in mid-June, it was decided to change the institution’s name. Discussions and responses have been raised by this choice, especially from the Congress party. The center of the name controversy has been the former Teen Murti Bhavan, which served as Jawaharlal Nehru’s official residence.
Congressman Jairam Ramesh criticised the government at the centre, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could never erase Jawaharlal Nehru’s enormous contributions to the nation’s liberation struggle. He continued by saying that Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy would continue to motivate future generations.
When the decision was approved by the society’s general body on June 15, the process of altering the name got under way. The final approval was given a few days before the shift, with the process modification requiring several procedures and approvals.
