Georgia has indicted Former US President Donald Trump and 18 of his allies following an investigation into his attempts to have the state’s 2020 election results overturned. “Criminal attempts to meddle in Georgia’s presidential election” is the subject of the charges.
The 13 felony counts in the indictment include forging conspiracy, making false statements, and impersonating a public authority. This is the fourth indictment against Trump this year, and it may result in the first presidential trial to be broadcast on television.
The indictment also includes 18 co-defendants from Trump’s circle, including Rudy Giuliani, his former lawyer, and Mark Meadows, his former White House chief of staff.
The argument revolves around a phone call made by Trump to Georgia’s top election official on January 2, 2021, in which he pleaded with the official to “find” enough votes to overturn his close loss in the state. On January 6, 2021, Trump’s followers also barricaded the US Capitol in an effort to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s victory.
Trump, the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2024 election, has characterized the investigations into him as politically motivated. The indictment was attacked by his legal team as being unlawful and based on biased grand jury testimony.
Former secretary of state and commentator Hillary Clinton says, ‘It is a “terrible moment for our country” to have a former president charged with such crimes’.
