The Cherokee are a native American tribe indigenous to the Southeastern United States. They have historically inhabited in present-day states such as Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and parts of Alabama. The rich history, culture, and heritage are also certain treasures of Cherokees.
Living in a matrilineal kinship, the Cherokees spoke Iroquoian which is one of the few native American languages. Cherokees have to be appreciated for their initiative in preserving their cultural identity. Even now, initiatives of teaching and revitalising Cherokee language and culture is continuing.
The incident of ‘Trail of Tears’ still reflect the history. The Indian removal Act by U. S. Government in 1830, forcibly relocated the tribes to Indian territory, including Cherokees. This forced journey, known as the Trail of Tears, resulted in the deaths of thousands of Cherokees due to exposure, disease, and hardship. Despite the challenges, they rebuilt their communities in Indian Territory, and thus within United states, Cherokee Nation is a sovereign entity today.
