Bengaluru: The torrential downpour in the last 2 days, especially in Bengaluru, has broken the past records for one day rain in the city this year. As the rainfall has increased in Bengaluru since a week, the highest rainfall this year so far was 111.5 mm on April 30 late night. Still, 31.5 mm of rain was recorded from noon to evening on May 1, and heavy rain continued.
After April 30 afternoon, the cloudy weather started and it was raining evenly. Light to moderate rain fell and experienced in many areas of the city. Due to this, several areas like K. R. Puram, K. R. Market Road, Town Hall, K. R. Circle, Malleshwaram, Majestic Under Bridge, Shivananda Circle, Hebbal, Jayanagar, Koramangala, Yelahanka and Madiwala in the city experienced heavy rain. It continued till late night.
Rajarajeshwari Nagara received 35 mm of rain, Arekere 32 mm, Kengeri 22 mm, Bommanahalli 19 mm, Hampinagara 18.5 mm, Bilekahalli 17 mm, Singasandra 15.50 mm, and H. Gollahalli 11.5 mm. On May 1, there was heavy rain across Bengaluru.
Due to the rain, the motorists and roadside traders have suffered. It was common to witness stagnant water everywhere on the road. Rain will continue in Bengaluru for the next four to five days. Bengaluru is expected to receive widespread rain on May 2. Therefore, the Indian Meteorological Department announced a ‘yellow alert’ for Bengaluru on May 2.
Before the end of summer, the pre-monsoon rains have poured heavily in Bengaluru. The rainfall after April 30 evening is the heaviest rainfall in the East Monsoon in 2023, according to Meteorological Department reports.
In the previous 24 hours, Horamavu recorded the highest rainfall of the year at 111.5 mm (more than 10 cm). Apart from this, Jakkuru and Yelahanka received 64.5 mm each, V Nagenahalli 57 mm, Kodigehalli 43 mm, and Hemmigepur 23 mm.
