I, as a teenager had overload of pimples all over my cheeks. No amount of bitter gourd juice, sandalwood paste, facewashes, etc. changed my skin. I had friends with flawless skin and was quite envious. Then, I did not know that we humans have different skin types. Today, though I do not have great skin but yes, I have learnt to distinguish between skin types and follow a proper skin care regime.
I am sharing my learnings and hope it helps you.
There are basically 5 skin types.
Normal Skin Type
Not too dry and not too oily, normal skin has:
• No or few imperfections
• No severe sensitivity
• Barely visible pores
• A radiant complexion
Dry Skin Type
You may have:
• Almost invisible pores
• Dull, rough complexion
• Red patches
• Less elastic skin
• More visible lines
Combination Skin Type
Your skin can be dry or normal in some areas and oily in others, such as the T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin). Many people have this type. It may need slightly different care in different areas.
Combination skin can have
• Pores that look larger than normal because they’re more open
• Blackheads
• Shiny skin
Oily Skin Type
You may have:
• Enlarged pores
• Dull or shiny, thick complexion
• Blackheads, pimples, or other blemishes
Sensitive Skin Type
It can show up as:
• Redness
• Itching
• Burning
• Dryness
My skin type is ‘combination’, it shines like gold (pun intended). I always thought moisturising was a big no for skin prone to acne or producing more natural oil called sebum compared to normal skin type, but I was wrong. I followed a basic and simple skin care regime, that helped my skin stay hydrated and supple.
1. Cleansing: I use a mild cleanser to remove grime.
2. Moisturising: I use one that is non greasy.
3. Sunscreen: This is a must; the skin needs protections from harmful UV rays that could damage our skin.
At night, I skip the moisturiser and use a serum instead.
Apart from following the above regime, I drink lots of water, eat healthy and on time, and sleep for 8 hours. I also, always remove my make up before going to bed. Leaving make up on can results in wrinkles, fine lines eventually. I use a make up remover that also doubles for a toner.
Again, I would like to emphasise on the fact that one should find their own regime, that they should follow and of course the one that works for their skin.
