Bengaluru: The Congress party has emerged victorious in the Karnataka Assembly Elections, generating anticipation nationwide. As the party prepares to form a new government, speculation surrounds the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. Former CM Siddaramaiah and KPCC President D. K. Shivakumar are the frontrunners in the Congress party’s CM race. Let’s explore the strengths of each candidate.
Siddaramaiah enjoys considerable popularity as a mass leader in Karnataka politics, having won the election with a significant margin. Exit polls and pre-election surveys have consistently predicted Siddaramaiah as the preferred choice for CM, reflecting the will of the people.
Shivakumar played a crucial role in revitalising the Congress party during a period of crisis in Karnataka. Despite facing IT and ED raids, Shivakumar remained loyal to the party, earning him respect and admiration within the Congress.
Following their clear majority in the elections, the Congress party will convene a legislative meeting. The selection of the CM candidate will be determined by the High Command, taking into account factors such as Siddaramaiah’s seniority and mass leader status.
Alternatively, there is a possibility of choosing Shivakumar based on recommendations from Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala, party observers, and MLAs.
Power Sharing Formula
If a competition arises between Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah for the CM post, the High Command may intervene and propose a power-sharing arrangement between the two.
Siddaramaiah has expressed his commitment to the democratic selection of the CM candidate, while Shivakumar has cleared the way for Mallikarjuna Kharge by indicating his willingness to make sacrifices.
