Bengaluru: Bengaluru International Airport and Indigo Airlines have been fined Rs. 12 Lakh each for their negligence in not providing wheelchairs and not providing proper medical care during an emergency, resulting in the death of a person. On November 19, 2021, Chandra Shetty’s wife Sumathi and daughter Dikshita Shetty, who were originally from Mangalore and then lived in Yelahanka, Bangalore, booked an Indigo flight to travel to Mangalore through Kempegowda International Airport and arrived at the Airport. While checking in at the airport, 60-year-old Chandra Shetty collapsed inside the airport. Daughter Dikshita and wife Sumati sought the help of airport staff and IndiGo staff to save their father who fell unconscious. But the airport staff failed to help him during the medically called golden hour (Emergency Time). Thus, the situation worsened. The golden hour was lost without any medical check due to the negligence of the airport staff.
Aggrieved by this, daughter Dikshita and wife Sumathi filed a complaint against Bangalore Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL) Management Company Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and Indigo Airlines at the KIA police station on December 7, 2021.
But in the background of no benefit, on March 2022, she filed a complaint against Bengaluru Airport and Indigo Airlines in Bangalore City District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Even after the notice of the consumer court, the representatives of Indigo Airlines failed to present their case before the consumer court. The attorney representing BIAL denied all the allegations leveled by Itta Chandra Shetty’s family. Airport staff took him to a clinic inside the terminal. He informed the court that later he was sent to the nearby Aster Hospital.
