Technology has revolutionised the way we live, work, and connect with each other. As a part of the tech industry, we should feel proud of the profound impact our work has on people’s lives. However, women working in the tech industry face significant challenges, particularly in junior, senior, leadership, and management positions.
Initially, men dominated the tech industry as setting up physical computers was perceived as a male-dominated job. But as technology progressed, women started to play a significant role in the industry. In fact, coding was first introduced by women. However, men still dominate the industry, but there is a growing trend towards gender diversity in tech companies, with many striving for at least 35% female employees.
Despite this, discrimination against women still exists, particularly in roles, pay, and promotions. There is a pervasive misconception that women cannot handle personal responsibilities and work commitments as effectively as men, which is entirely false.
To address these issues, we recently organised a meeting to establish a forum for women in our tech community. Our main goal was to bring all women together to share their experiences, challenges, stories of bravery, and support for each other. This initiative aimed to encourage our female employees to speak up about any gender-biased experiences they may have faced and provide support, ask questions, and grow in their roles.
In summary, women in tech face various challenges, including discrimination, but efforts are underway to promote gender diversity and inclusivity in the industry. Establishing forums and communities for women in tech can provide a safe space for them to share their experiences and grow professionally.
