Bengaluru: Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy unveiled details regarding the Congress party’s pre-election promise of providing free public bus travel for women in Karnataka. This eagerly anticipated announcement followed a meeting between Reddy and the chiefs of four State Road Transportation Corporations (SRTCs) in Bengaluru.
During the high-level meeting, officials meticulously outlined the potential costs associated with this ambitious initiative, approximating an annual expenditure of approximately Rs. 3,200 Crore for the transportation corporations. It was no secret that these corporations were already grappling with financial challenges. Consequently, officials earnestly appealed to the government for the provision of essential grants to ensure the successful implementation of the policy of free bus travel for women.
Speaking to media representatives, Reddy expressed his commitment to honoring the party’s guarantee. He said that a comprehensive report on the financial implications of this policy will be submitted to the Chief Minister. The matter would be subject to careful consideration and deliberation during the Cabinet meeting, where a decision would be reached.
Moreover, Reddy made it clear that this initiative would extend its benefits to all women, regardless of their socioeconomic status. There would be no distinction made between Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Above Poverty Line (APL) cardholders, thus ensuring inclusivity and equal access to this initiative.
Anticipation now grows for the final verdict on the implementation of the Congress party’s set of freebie promises. This highly anticipated decision is poised to be unveiled during the Council of Ministers meeting, convened by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, at the Vidhana Soudha on May 31.
