Bengaluru: The Home Minister of Karnataka, Dr. G. Parameshwara in his visit to Udupi claimed that illegal drug peddling has increased in the coastal region of the state.
Addressing the press after a meeting at the SP’s office in Udupi, the Minister said that the Government is committed to protect the welfare of citizens, especially the “vulnerable youth”.
During the press conference, Dr. Parameshwara said the trend of drug peddlers preying on students is disturbing and lamented the adverse impact it has on their lives. The Home Minister then stated that he has informed the police about the increasing drug menace in Coastal Karnataka.
Under the new strategy, law enforcement agencies will prioritise the identification and dismantling of drug supply chains. Dr. Parameshwara emphasised that all levels of the police force would be actively engaged and will be accountable for keeping a lid on drug peddling.
To reinforce the message that illegal drug peddling will not be tolerated, the Home Minister emphasised the need for swift and stringent action against perpetrators. He urged law enforcement officials to be proactive in gathering intelligence, and ensuring robust surveillance to identify and apprehend those involved in the illicit drug trade.
In response to questions regarding the future of the anti-naxal squad as naxal activity has gone down, Parameshwara clarified that the government does not have plans to reduce security.
When asked about the possibility of lifting the ban on hijab, the Home Minister explained that any decisions in this regard would be made in accordance with the law and after due consideration of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
In concluding his address, Parameshwara said that 15,000 vacancies are yet to be filled in the police departments. He also underscored the government’s dedication to strengthening the police force through recruitment drives and timely promotions.
