Along with soothing words, another important and significant aspect of human interaction happens through shaking of hands. The sources say that the shaking of hand was practiced in ancient period. But unlike today, back in the time shaking hands were the indication of peace. Even in the works of Homer i.e “Iliad” and “Odyssey,” handshakes are mentioned resembling the pledge and the trust.

In USA, hand shake comes with the introduction of the individual with name. American’s usually practice the tradition of giving a hug, when saying a hello and also for a goodbye. Where as people of UAE begin the handshake with the eldest in a group. But usage of right hand is the basic etiquette here and which continues with the small embrace along with the known ones.
In china when shaking a hand, do not make a direct eye contact where as the people of Russia do not shake hands with women unless it is a business meet. Same is the tradition in Turkey. Here, the hand shake with opposite gender is not encouraged.
Looking at our society India, we have diverse practices. People in our country shake hands, greet by folding the hands together and even by keeping a single hand on a chest with slight smile and a nod. It is Hindu tradition of folding hands and greeting, with Namaste. Muslims greet with shaking hands and a slight hug and salaam. Whereas it is the women who decides whether she chooses to shake hands with opposite gender or no based on her comfort in this part of the world.
