Dharawad: The state Government’s Shakti Scheme has had a side effect on autorickshaw drivers. As a result, there are hoardings found in Hubballi stating that there are autos on sale. Auto drivers are worried about not doing the expected business. Inevitably, some people have come forward to selling autos.
The implementation of the Shakti scheme has started having a direct impact on auto drivers. Auto drivers are facing difficulties after the implementation of the scheme. Some owners have come forward to sell autos without any work. But there is no one to buy them.
The Government has made bus travel free for women. The auto drivers said that the Government is not bothered about the impact on the autos. We have suffered a lot due to the energy project. There is a lot of struggle for passengers, they said and alleged that the auto drivers were not at present getting even minimum wages a day.
25,000 auto drivers in twin cities:
In the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharawad, 25,000 drivers are dependent on autos. Women are not turning to autos due to Government’s free scheme. The families of auto drivers are finding it difficult to make a living. So some auto drivers have put autos for sale.
Increase in the number of women passengers
The number of women passengers travelling in transport buses has increased since the implementation of the Shakti scheme. Buses are overflowing with women passengers during the weekend. Women who travel free of cost will have to show their identity cards and get a zero-price ticket. Otherwise, a fine will have to be paid.
