New Delhi: Exciting developments are underway regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, which aims to establish a single law applicable to all citizens in the country. The Law Commission is actively seeking opinions and feedback on the implementation of this code, while receiving substantial support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a positive stride forward, the Central Government has announced its readiness to introduce the Uniform Civil Code Bill during the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament, scheduled to commence in July.
The Monsoon session, set to begin in the third week of July, will witness the presentation of the Uniform Civil Code Bill. If approved, this significant legislation will come into effect, revolutionising the legal framework of the nation. In anticipation of this milestone, a crucial meeting has been arranged on July 3, bringing together representatives from various sectors such as staff, public grievance, the parliamentary standing committee on law and justice, and the Law Commission.
During this meeting, the aim is to reach a consensus and finalise the bill, which will subsequently be forwarded to the Parliamentary Standing Committee. This committee will thoroughly examine and deliberate on the bill, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation leading to a final decision. Following this crucial step, the bill will be presented in both houses of Parliament during the subsequent spring session. As per the Central Government’s perspective, the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code appears highly probable within this year.
In recent days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his support for the Uniform Civil Code, emphasising the importance of equal rights and the need for a unified legal framework. While the Supreme Court has also advocated for its implementation, some opposition parties seem to be engaging in vote bank politics, opposing the idea. Nevertheless, the concept of a Uniform Civil Code seeks to establish a legal framework that transcends divisions of caste, religion, and creed. Article 44 of the Constitution explicitly promotes the need for a Uniform Civil Code.
In 2019, a petition was filed in court urging the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in India, highlighting its potential to eliminate practices such as polygamy among Muslims. By establishing a singular law that applies uniformly to all citizens, this code aims to foster equality and harmony in the country. However, several religious organisations and politicians continue to voice their opposition to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, sparking a lively and ongoing debate.
