Bengaluru: The ongoing deliberations over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India has been taking considerations from various sources. H. Vishwanath, a Congress Leader and Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) on the other hand, believes that the BJP is merely using the topic to gain mileage in the upcoming Lok Sabha and claims the UCC will not be implemented.
In his latest critique, Vishwanath dismissed the possibility of the UCC being enforced, denouncing it as nothing more than an “election gimmick” used by the BJP.
“Implementation of the Uniform Civil Code has long stirred contention, with numerous interests advocating for its adoption throughout the years. Nevertheless, it is crucial to recognise that our nation’s federal structure bestows importance upon the consensus of each state. The renewed vigour surrounding this issue can be directly traced to the forthcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This is nothing but a calculated endeavour aimed at garnering votes,” Vishwanath mentioned during a media interaction in Mysuru.
It is to be noted that Vishwanath’s political journey encompasses various shifts in party affiliations. Initially securing his position in the Upper House under the writers’ quota during the BJP Government in Karnataka, he then joined the Congress as the Assembly elections approached.
Prior to his involvement with the BJP, Vishwanath had transitioned from the Congress to the JDS and subsequently to the BJP. All in all, Vishwanath has been successful over the years to get a taste of all major parties in Karnataka.
It appears he has found his place back in Congress, where his loyalty belongs. Of course, his words are not to be believed as his primary intention now is to try and help Congress with the Lok Sabha election. That could still change, as he may decide to shift to another party once again.
