Udupi: In the coastal town of Udupi, where rain once brought life and prosperity, a calamity struck that claimed the lives of seven individuals. The downpour seemed relentless, causing destruction and leaving a trail of sorrow in its wake. Among the grieving were the families of the victims, burdened not only by the loss of their loved ones but also by the damage inflicted upon their properties.
Lakshmi Hebbalkar, the District In-Charge Minister, emerged as a beacon of hope in the midst of despair. Recognising the urgency of the situation, she swiftly took charge, directing District officials to expedite the release of state compensation to the affected families. The Minister’s unwavering determination led to the deposit of Rs. 5 Lakh per person into the accounts of six victims within a mere 25 hours. She pledged that the seventh victim’s family would also be compensated within the next 24 hours, ensuring that none were left behind in their time of need.
Hebbalkar ventured into the flood-affected areas and made a poignant visit to the Padubidri sea face. Witnessing the extent of the damage first-hand, her empathy deepened. While she acknowledged that preventive measures could have been better, she remained resolute in her commitment to address the aftermath and provide solace to the affected families.
During a press interaction, a question arose regarding the delayed state grant of Rs. 500 Crore allocated for the construction of a vented dam in the Udupi District. Displaying her determination and accountability, Hebbalkar assured the public that she understood the urgency of the matter, especially considering the District’s water needs during the scorching summer months. She promised to delve into the issue, engaging with the Government to ensure necessary steps were taken to fulfil the requirements of the community.
The Minister announced her ambitious plan to launch the Gruhalakshmi scheme—an emblem of the Government’s commitment to its people—by July 14th. This initiative aimed to empower households and uplift the lives of the citizens affected by the rain fury. It encompassed a range of comprehensive measures to mitigate the impact of natural disasters, providing support and rebuilding shattered lives.
Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao, Minister Hebbalkar embarked on a journey across the affected regions, visiting the beachfront and riverbanks that bore the brunt of the rain’s havoc. Together, they assessed the magnitude of the devastation and reaffirmed their commitment to the recovery process.
