The continued conflict between the ethnic communities in Manipur, have lead us to learn in depth about the variety of tribal groups, their existence and practices. The Kuki are the group of people belonging to North East Indian states of Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. These are an ethnic tribal groups who are into the practice of shifting cultivation.
In the mainland India, food cooked and served using bamboo tube has it’s own fan base. For Kuki’s it is their traditional pattern of cooking through bamboo tube along with mud and metal tubes. There is a traditional harvesting festival of Chin, Kuki and Andmizo community in Manipur known as, “The Chavang Kut”. Being the harvesting group of people, these communities celebrate the festival as a celebration of their successful season of harvesting. The change in Chavang Kut is the proof to emphasise, not even the tribal group of north east is an exception to the modern influence.
The festival which was actually a weeklong celebration got restricted to a single day, with evolution of time. Chavang Kut is the festival, where all communities in Manipur gather together, which is said to represent an important cultural expression of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo group of people in Manipur.
The Chavang Kut festival, a sign of cultural peace harmony and co-existence should also turn as a peace maker between the raged conflict between the ethnic group of the states.
