Udupi: On July 12, the Udupi District experienced more dry weather, with a brief period of rain in the afternoon. While there was still some light rain late in the evening, it had almost stopped. A total of five houses were partially damaged on July 11 in the Taluks of Brahmavara, Kundapur, Hebri, and Kaup due to rain-related incidents. Five houses were damaged in these incidents, and the total loss is estimated to be Rs. 3,44,000 in all. Victims who suffered losses have sought compensation from the Tahasildars of their respective taluks.
In the meantime, on July 12, Udupi Tahasildar Ravi S. Angadi presided over a meeting of Taluk level officials and gave them instructions to make sure that no more lives are lost as a result of rain havoc. Make sure no one’s life or the lives of cattle heads are in danger during the rains. Be proactive and ensure their safety’’ he said. Ravi S. Angadi urged all officials to stay in their offices during the rainy season, saying that it was important to estimate the damage that would be done to properties as soon as possible and to take immediate action to compensate the victims.
It is important to identify flood-prone areas in advance and take precautions. The Tahasildar added that rehabilitation facilities should be found and should meet all fundamental needs. Additionally, he noted that MESCOM and forest department officials should identify tree branches that are endangering commuters on the roads and that staff members should always be prepared to remove any fallen trees that are impeding traffic. Officials from the Education Department should inform parents and students about the safety precautions that need to be taken during periods of heavy rain.
