Jammu: A 45-year-old man in Udhampur District of Jammu and Kashmir has been awarded the death penalty by a local court for beheading his mother in 2014 over a piece of land dispute.
The Principal Sessions Judge, Udhampur, Haq Nawaz Zargar, who delivered the verdict on Saturday, stated that the murder committed by the convict, Jeet Singh, appeared to be a premeditated one. Singh had attacked his defenseless mother with a sickle on the neck and then chopped off her head with an axe in a barbaric and inhumane manner.
The incident had occurred on December 7, 2014, at the accused’s residence in Ramnagar. Singh had also attempted to kill his wife, Santosh Devi, when she tried to save her mother-in-law.
The judgement has been welcomed by the victim’s family and the local community, who have been seeking justice for the gruesome crime. The verdict will send a strong message to those who commit such heinous crimes and will hopefully serve as a deterrent to others.
It is important to note that violence over land disputes is a common occurrence in many parts of the country, and it is necessary to find peaceful and legal solutions to such conflicts to avoid tragedies like this in the future.
