Meta-owned WhatsApp is in the process of developing several new features that are set to enhance the user experience. As reported by WABetaInfo, among these features is the introduction of usernames, allowing users to select a unique identifier to associate with their WhatsApp account. This new functionality, observed in the beta version 2.23.11.15 for Android, suggests that users may be able to locate each other using usernames instead of relying solely on phone numbers. Notably, conversations initiated via usernames will benefit from end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy and security, according to WABetaInfo.
Furthermore, beta testers utilising version 2.23.11.19 of the Android app have spotted an additional feature: screen sharing. By selecting the screen sharing button during video calls, users can confirm and share the contents of their screen. Screenshots indicate that the feature also includes the ability to record the shared portion of the call, offering added convenience.
WhatsApp is also rolling out a “status archive” setting to select beta testers. This feature enables businesses to archive their statuses after 24 hours and reshare them later. As WABetaInfo points out, the status archive feature appears to be primarily aimed at companies for the time being.
WhatsApp’s upcoming features, including usernames, screen sharing, and the status archive, aim to provide users with more flexibility and options for their interactions within the messaging platform.
However, the screen sharing feature may not be compatible with older versions of the Android operating system and may have limitations in large group calls. In cases where a recipient is using an outdated version of WhatsApp, they will be unable to receive the shared content, even if the sender initiates screen sharing.
Users who install this update may notice changes in the arrangement of tabs within the navigation bar. The tabs are now organised in the following order: Chats, Calls, Communities, and Status.
The new update, including the screen sharing feature and the rearranged layout for tabs, is currently available to selected beta testers. Over the next few weeks, it will be gradually rolled out to more users.
