Nvidia Corp, a prominent gaming and AI chip company, achieved a significant milestone recently by becoming the first chipmaker to join the exclusive trillion-dollar club. The company’s market capitalisation surpassed $1 trillion, driving its shares up by 4.2% during early trading.
As of now, Nvidia holds the top spot among chipmakers in terms of market valuation, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd following closely behind at approximately $535 billion.
Meta Platforms Inc, with a market valuation of roughly $670 billion, will reach the trillion-dollar barrier in 2021. Other significant US corporations, including Apple Inc, Alphabet Inc (Google’s parent company), Microsoft Corp, and Amazon.com Inc, have also received this honour.
Wall Street analysts described Nvidia’s extraordinary surge as “unfathomable” and “cosmological.” In reaction, they increased their price targets dramatically, with the highest valuation putting the business at around $1.6 trillion, on par with Google parent Alphabet.
While Nvidia’s prediction has been lauded, experts warn that its high value necessitates sustained rapid growth, which may cause instability in the company’s share price in the future. Hargreaves Lansdown’s head of money and markets, Susannah Streeter, emphasised the pressure on Nvidia to generate consistent growth due to its premium valuation.
Nvidia’s sales projection this week exceeded analysts’ forecasts by more than 50%, cementing the company’s position as a leader in the AI area. Due to the company’s great growth, Thomas Hayes, chairman of Great Hill Capital, has described Nvidia as the “poster child for AI at the moment.” Investors are rapidly seeing the value of AI technology, and Nvidia’s projection has prompted a surge in AI-related companies as well as helped other equities.
The success of OpenAI-owned ChatGPT, an AI language model, has also contributed to Nvidia’s prominence in the AI sector. Tech giants like Alphabet and Microsoft have taken note of ChatGPT’s rapid success and are exploring the potential of generative AI, which can engage in human-like conversation and create a wide range of content, including jokes and poetry.
Nvidia’s achievement of crossing the trillion-dollar valuation threshold cements its position as a key player in the chip industry and highlights the growing importance of AI in various sectors.
