Bagalakote: River Krishna that usually inundates hundreds of hectares of land during rainy season is now facing scarcity of water.
The villages like Shiraguppi, Tubuchi, Shurpali, Maiguru, Kadakola, Jambagi, Aalaguru and Chikkapadaslagi of Jamakhandi Taluk in the District have been facing water scarcity. The Shramabindu Sagara Dam of Chikkapadaslagi has been empty without water since more than one week. This has affected lakhs of people, animals and birds.
The farmers near the river banks are trying to lift the small quantity of water left under the Earth’s layer through the JCB.
Every summer when Krishna dries up the Maharashtra used to release the water from Koina Dam. However this year the water which has released from the Koina Dam has not reached Shramabindu Sagara Dam. The animals are not getting enough quantity of drinking water. Moreover the yeilds in thousands of hectares have dried up too. The farmers of this locality have been urging the Karnataka Government to speak with Maharashtra Government and make them release enough quantity of water from Koina Dam.
Jamakhandi Town gets drinking water from the jack well near Hipparagi and Sanala. However, it also does not have water and Jamakhandi is facing drinking water scarcity.
Farmer organisation Chief Kallappa Biradar said, “Before election the MLAs of both Congress and BJP used to write letters to Chief Minister and officials seeking water. But no one is bothered now after election”.
