Come election season and one gets to witness a variety of performances by our political babus. If one party is doing a certain stunt to woo the voters, the other party member doesn’t want to be left behind. He wants to beat the former and race ahead. He will then try and put a greater show. And this greater show will be at an extra cost, and yes, in millions probably.
Recently we got to witness a high voltage campaigning during the Karnataka elections. It came to an end with the three major political parties BJP, Congress and JD (S) making a last-ditch effort to woo the voters. They made their best efforts.
All the top political leaders made a bee line to the state for campaigning. The voters were promised freebies. There were reports of politicians offering money against votes. Voters were even offered goodies. Everything from sarees, harvester machines, mixer grinders, pressure cookers, pulses, money and many many more such things were doled out.
All this, so that the politician is elected to power. This behaviour of the politician during the elections is mainly to make the people believe that they are doing it for the love of their motherland and to serve the countrymen. However, now everyone is aware why a politician wants to come to power.
The wooing of voters has left the voters frustrated, confused and annoyed. This wooing has been going on for so many years. Most of the promises remain unfulfilled. The voters have now realised that this drama continues only till the election day. The day after the results were out, these voters are forgotten till the next elections.
The voters have now become wiser and can see through these lies and misrepresentation. They are now questioning this expenditure. Instead of spending millions to pursue the voters, if the same amount is spent on the development works, there was no need for any pursuing. People would themselves vote for a partyman who has done a good job.
In India especially, we do not have much expectations from them. Even when the basic development isn’t done, however it is frustrating to the voters. Hoping that these politicians finally learn from their past mistakes and spend money on development rather than on the promotions.
