Bengaluru: The Education Department has issued an important order regarding reducing the school bag weight of school children. The Education Department has fixed the bag weight for students of class 1 to 10.
This important order has been issued by the Commissioner of the Public Education Department and this rule applies to government, aided and private schools as well. The education department has ordered that all schools should follow this rule compulsorily.
The order stated the class and weight details that has Class 1-2 – 1.5 to 2 kg, Class 3-5 – 2-3 kg, Class 6-8 – 3-4 kg and for Class 9-10 – 4-5 kg the department announced.
DSERT conducted the study in collaboration with NLSUI, Center for Child Law and submitted a report to the Government.
The report recommends that students carry a school bag weighing 10-15% of their body weight. Based on the recommendation of orthopedic experts, DSERT has issued a report on bag weight, using which the education department has reduced the weight of the school bag.
How is the light weight bag rule enforced?
School SMC, SDMC and school heads should take action to follow the department order. The schools should teach only the syllabus prescribed by NCERT from 1st to 5th standard. No other curriculum is like teaching. If any other curriculum is taught beyond the rules, the school will be de-recognised.
The Education Department will form a special team to monitor compliance and carry out inspections. CRP and ECO at cluster level, BRC and BEO at block level should visit and inspect the school. At the district level, DDPIs, Diet Principals should visit and inspect the schools.
