“Routine is a ground to stand on, a wall to retreat to; we cannot draw on our boots without bracing ourselves against it,” according to Henry David Thoreau. Successful people emphasise on a routine, a plan, said Jack Dorsey, CEO Square and Founder of Twitter, and adds he can juggle between the companies only because of his routine.
It is important to be very disciplined.
• Benjamin Franklin had a routine set for himself, for sleeping, working and his meals. Every evening he would ask himself, “What good have I done today?”
So, there it is, crystal clear. One needs to practice a disciplined routine, if not he would be multi-tasking, inefficiently.
Let us get to the next plan to set a routine. Dominic Mann in his book, mentions another book he read and claims it to be one the best productivity book, ‘The ONE Thing’. It is good to have a daily energy plan. The book summarises the 5 components that is goes into a highly productive person’s daily energy plan.
• Spiritual energy – meditate
• Physical energy – eat right, sleep well and exercise
• Emotional energy – spend time with people you love, express your emotions through hugs and laughter
• Mental energy – Set goals
• Business energy – Schedule the most important task for the day or week
Doing the above five will keep your energy and spirit high throughout.
Mann, goes on to talk ‘How to wake up feeling energised?’. Have you heard of SWS or slow-wave-sleep? I hadn’t, until I read this book.
SWS is also known as deep sleep, a stage where the brainwaves are the slowest and the body is in the most restful state. Slow-wave-sleep lasts around 45-90 minutes. As we fall asleep our body transitions from light sleep to SWS and then to REM (rapid eye movement), also referred to as sleep cycle.
Typically, most adults have about 3-5 (90 minutes, 3 hours, four and a half hours, 6 hours, seven and a half hours or 9 nine hours) sleep cycles a night. So, when one wakes up at the end of the sleep cycle, that is waking up naturally, he feels refreshed and not groggy, meaning he has had a good night’s sleep.
Plan your sleep and set the alarm accordingly. Try this and see if you actually wake up refreshed or not.
