In a remarkable display of diplomatic synergy and shared commitment to bolstering security, India and France are strengthening their defence cooperation. The two Nations have further solidified mutual cooperation in the defence sector in a fervent display of solidarity and commitment to enhancing security.
Elevating Defence Cooperation:
At the heart of this burgeoning alliance lies the establishment of a technical office of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) within the Indian embassy in Paris.
The joint commitment to co-develop and co-produce cutting-edge defence technologies reflects a deep understanding of the interconnected nature of security challenges. Both countries are on the path to adopting a comprehensive ‘Roadmap on Defence Industrial Cooperation’, a bold step toward cementing their collaboration further.
An Aviation Renaissance:
India and France’s exemplary cooperation in military aviation, spanning over five decades, has reached new heights with the timely delivery of the 36 Rafale aircraft ordered by India. Looking to the future, the two Nations pledge to extend their collaboration into advanced aeronautical technologies, with plans underway for the joint development of a combat aircraft engine. A robust roadmap for this ambitious project, spearheaded by Safran and DRDO, is set to be unveiled before the year’s end.
Notably, the partnership extends to motorisation endeavours under the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) programme, where Safran Helicopter Engine’s industrial cooperation with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has taken shape.
This collaboration promises to push the boundaries of aerospace technology, propelling the IMRH program to new heights.
Unwavering Maritime Defence:
The success of the Scorpene submarine construction programme (Project P75 – Kalvari Class) stands as a proud testament to the “Make in India” initiative. Symbolising the seamless exchange of naval expertise between India and France. This milestone serves as a blueprint for future endeavours.
In line with this achievement, the MoU between Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (Indian Public Sector Undertaking) and Naval Group (French Public Limited Company) for constructing additional submarines under the P75 programme highlights the unwavering commitment to enhancing India’s submarine fleet.
Technology Transfer and Make in India:
A cornerstone of the India-France defence partnership is the Transfer of Technology of Forging and Castings for the Shakti Engine. This vital agreement between Safran Helicopter Engine and HAL exemplifies the mutual trust that underpins the military-industry relationship between the two nations.
As the French government encourages technology transfer and promoting Make in India initiatives, the potential for transformative developments in defence is unparalleled.
The Way Forward:
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the Bastille Day Parade in the role of Guest of Honour, it signified a celebration of 25 years of the strategic partnership between India and France. Beyond the grandeur of the event, it was a moment of reflection on the commitment to bolstering global security through defence cooperation.
As a Nation that had built a multitude of warships like Normandie, Courbet, Jeanne d’Arc and the old dreadnought battleship Dunkerque, France has made a mark in naval warfare. With a shared enthusiasm and determination, India and France are poised to explore more projects, ensuring the growth and performance of India’s defence capabilities.
