We live in a society; hence we are bound to follow some social norms, and I stress on the word ‘some’. There are norms which are gender specific and quite biased, at times demeaning as well, and these norms we should refuse to follow. As I was growing, I was subjected to some comments, which were unpleasant and put down my morale. Judging and comparing, are very common in our households. And this happens more in our marital homes. There is an unrealistic perfection expected out of women, which does not give space for our opinions and suggestions.
There was an era, when women were only supposed to care for their home and live for their family, their dreams and desires were at the bottom, if there were to be a priority list made. They were not given the chance to choose between education and marriage, and they could not even see their life partner before the wedding day. Women were brought up to be obedient and submissive. They did not have any hold over finance. They were given a set of duties which they performed diligently, whether they liked it or not. Some, were killed even before they were born and some because their family could not fulfil the demands of the groom and his family. The list goes on.
The atrocities against women cannot be described in words. Reading all this may sound negative, not all have gone through gender discrimination but I think most of us have and still do.
Today women are more vocal about their feelings. They are educated, which plays a major role in the upliftment of women. Women are decision makers now, and they are financially independent and can take care of themselves. Women are more aware of their surroundings and happenings.
There are many organisation that help women in various ways. They help creating awareness on education, personal hygiene, health and more. Let us uplift each other and cheer for each other. Life is too short to do anything but LIVE happily.
