The iconic Pentagon held the esteemed title of the world’s largest office building for decades. However, the crown has now been claimed by a remarkable structure situated in the heart of Gujarat’s Surat – the Surat Diamond Bourse.
This architectural marvel is the pulsating hub for diamond trading, bringing together over 65,000 professionals, including skilled cutters, expert polishers, and astute traders, in what is aptly being hailed as a “one-stop destination” for the global diamond industry.
Surat, known as the diamond capital of world, has earned its reputation by contributing to 90 percent of the world’s polished diamonds. A fitting location for such a grand venture, the city stands tall as a symbol of excellence and ingenuity in the field of gemstone craftsmanship.
The Surat Diamond Bourse (SBD), standing 15 stories tall and sprawling over 35 acres of pristine land, features a distinctive design consisting of nine interconnected rectangular structures, all united by a central spine. The complex spans an awe-inspiring 7.1 million square feet of floor space, providing an extensive arena for diamond businesses to flourish.
The grand inauguration of this prestigious establishment is set to be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November of this year. The construction of this astounding edifice took an impressive four years to complete, a testament to the dedication and hard work invested in creating this architectural marvel.
The Surat Diamond Bourse has been thoughtfully designed by the Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis, which won an international design competition to undertake this prestigious project. Their vision and creativity have resulted in a breath-taking structure that seamlessly blends form and functionality.
What sets this diamond trading haven apart is its commitment to cater to every need of its occupants and visitors. In addition to its business-focused ambiance, the complex boasts an expansive recreational zone and a parking area that spans across 20 lakh square feet.
It is essential to note that the Surat Diamond Bourse is more than just a commercial entity; it is a not-for-profit organisation promoted by the SDB Diamond Bourse, a company registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. This underscores the institution’s altruistic purpose, prioritising the establishment and promotion of a thriving Diamond Bourse in Surat, Gujarat.
The promoters of this mega structure humbly shared that surpassing the Pentagon in size was not the primary objective. Instead, the project’s scale was a reflection of the immense demand and enthusiasm from the diamond companies themselves, with all offices being purchased well in advance of the construction.
The Surat Diamond Bourse is set to rewrite history and position India as the crowning jewel in the world of diamond trading and innovation. As this magnificent structure stands tall on the global stage, it is an embodiment of India’s brilliance and its ability to shine bright in the world of commerce and creativity.
