Vijayapura: The Alamatti Dam, one of the largest reservoirs in Karnataka, is filled upto the brim despite the lack of Monsoon rains. The water level has reached the maximum of 519.60 metres of the dam and the total storage capacity is 123.081 TMC feet.
The inflow into the dam started on July 12, and as a precautionary measure to fill small dams and tanks, water is being released from the crest gates. The Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited (KBJNL) has started releasing water to the canals from July 27 and will continue to do so in a regular manner till November 23.
On August 27, the dam received 2,153 TMC ft of water and all of them were released. Due to heavy rains in Maharashtra and the Western Ghats in the last week of July, the dam is receiving more than 1.5 lakh cusecs of water daily. The inflow had been declining since the first week of August.
Meanwhile, the newly constituted Irrigation Advisory Committee (ICC) to regulate and monitor the release of water for irrigation purposes will hold its first meeting on August 21 at the office of the Managing Director of Krishna Project on Alamatti.
The meeting will be chaired by Excise Minister R. B. Thimmapura, who is also the ICC President. MlAs and MPs from taluks along the banks of the river of dams are members of the committee. MlAs, MLCs and MPs from Vijayapura, Bagalakote, Koppal, Raichur, Yadgir and Kalaburagi are also its members.
