Renowned filmmaker Sriram Raghavan has spoken out against the hypocrisy prevalent in the film industry in response to a veiled attack made by Karan Johar. Raghavan’s comments shed light on the deep-rooted issues within the industry and the need for introspection and accountability.
The controversy began when Karan Johar posted a cryptic tweet that appeared to criticise an unnamed individual for their film choices. While not explicitly naming anyone, the tweet sparked speculation and debate among industry insiders and fans alike. In response, Sriram Raghavan took to social media to express his views on the matter, calling attention to the hypocrisy that often goes unnoticed within the film fraternity.
He wrote, “Big Bollywood releases get so upset when there is another big budget release the same day and they talk about how we should all care for each other in the industry, but don’t think for a second when they deprive a small budget indie film of a tiny number of good shows to survive.”
Onir’s tweet was in response to Karan’s post on Threads where the Director made a veiled attack on Director Siram Raghavan. The owner of Dharma Productions was all set to release his long-delayed film Yodha on December 15 but was disappointed to find Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas is scheduled to release on the same day. In the post, Karan said that it is not good for the industry if makers don’t discuss the release dates of their films.
He wrote, “Clashing on a date without the courtesy of a phone call is hopefully not the way forward for the studios and producers …. If we don’t stand united in these tough and challenging theatrical days then calling us a fraternity is futile…”
Yodha is Directed by Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha and stars Siddharth Malhotra, Disha Patani, and Raashi Khanna. The film is an action thriller that began production in 2021. Merry Christmas, on the other hand, stars Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif in prominent roles. Both films will compete at the box office this holiday season.
