Mangaluru: In an era marked by communal tensions and divisive narratives, a heartening tale of inter-faith harmony unfolds as a Hindu family expresses its gratitude to U. T. Khadar, the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Fondly referred to as ‘Khadar Sahib’ by the family, his magnanimity has left an indelible mark. The family’s Nagaradhane Shrine, situated in the Village of Pariyaltadka in Vittal, Puttur Taluk, Dakshina Kannada District, owes its revival to Khadar Sahib’s benevolence.
For generations, the Dalawayi family of Vittal had a Nagaradhane Shrine on a piece of land that held historical significance. However, during the land reforms initiated under Indira Gandhi’s tenure, the land changed ownership, eventually passing to the late grandfather of U. T. Khadar. Subsequently, Khadar inherited the property from his father, Late U. T. Fareed.
With the change in ownership, the Dalawayi family encountered challenges in maintaining their ancestral Nagaradhane Shrine. They moved the shrine to another location but soon found themselves facing various difficulties, including health and financial woes. Seeking answers through a religious process known as ‘Ashtamangala Prashne’, the family realised that the irregular poojas at the ancestral shrine were at the root of their troubles.
Turning to Khadar, the family requested permission to perform poojas to the Naga idols on land owned by him. They even offered to purchase 10 cents of land from him. Touched by their plight, Khadar not only donated the land to the family but also doubled the extent to 20 cents, all without any cost involved. This act of kindness, carried out some years ago, was guided by Khadar’s deep respect for the Nagaradhane culture of the coastal region and his empathy for the Dalawayi family.
The Nagaradhane Shrine, now restored by the family, attracts many elderly villagers who offer their prayers there. Their hearts overflow with gratitude towards Khadar, and on every Nagarapanchami festival, they remember and honour his generosity.
Speaking to Verito.today U. T. Khadar reflected, “The continued connection with the Dalawayi family and their remembrance of me on every Nagarapanchami festival is a blessing. It’s heartening to witness their shrine thriving once again.”
Elders from the Dalawayi family emphasised how Khadar’s land donation alleviated their struggles over the years. The shrine stands as a testament to Khadar Sahib’s enduring support during times of when the family was unable to perform rituals.
Noted writer Rashid Vitla hailed this extraordinary display of inter-faith compassion, highlighting that such instances are exceedingly rare in the region. Khadar’s role in facilitating this unity further solidifies his reputation as a remarkable leader.
