Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that investigative agencies should be one step ahead of criminals.
After inaugurating the Coordination Conference of Director Generals of Police of South Indian States on September 13. Appreciating the work of the police forces working round the clock, the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the police should be proactive in preventing cyber crimes. Cyber attacks have been increasing in various ways in the past few years and online cheating has become more common. He said that this is not only personal harm but also dangerous to national security.
Sophisticated forensic tools are helpful in leveling cyber criminals. Karnataka was the first state to open a cyber crime police station in 2003. The state has CEN police stations in every district of the state to prevent cyber crime. He said that the police officers of the cyber station have received special training to handle such cases.
He said that the internal security issues, which are challenging to the foundation of our country and the structure of society, need their full attention and cooperation. He said that unwavering commitment, dedication and duty are expected from the police who are responsible for maintaining law and order, public order and the safety and security of everyone in their area.
Constant modification in police tactics is necessary
Nowadays, the country is facing threats from traditional criminal activities to the digital sector. The complexities of modern society have also given rise to new forms of crime. Due to this, there is a need to continuously change the police strategy. He said that as law enforcers, they should not only be one step ahead of those who destroy the health of the society, but also should adapt quickly and adopt a new model.
The Karnataka State Police has done an excellent job in drug control and an international drug network has been unearthed. He said that the drug network run through the dark web has also been hacked. He said that although Naxal activities have been curbed in the state, more cooperation is needed between the states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu to level this problem.
He said that terrorist activities have also taken place in the state, and to suppress them, information collection, coordination, cooperation and action against terrorist organizations are necessary.
Inter-state coordination
The chief minister said that it is necessary to monitor inter-state criminals and gangs, if there is coordination and cooperation between different states, it will be easy to level the criminals.
The chief minister said that it is necessary to take action to isolate the extremists in the jails and more emphasis is being laid on the use of technology, training and capacity building of the police officers.
He said, I am happy to participate in the conference of DGPs of South Indian States. I am confident that this conference will help in establishing greater cooperation and coordination among the states of South India in crime detection and crime control.
The world of crime has no borders. There is no limit. Mutual exchange of information, resources and techniques among various states is essential for effective suppression of crime. While the criminal world has no borders, there should be no borders between security forces and investigative agencies in curbing it, said CM Siddaramaiah.
He said, South India poses many challenges in crime prevention due to its cultural diversity, different languages and geography. Drug trafficking, human trafficking, organized crime, cybercrime pose a threat to the peace and security of society and community. As all these crimes operate across state borders, coordination and cooperation between inter-state police teams is necessary to suppress them. Joint operations can be helpful in defeating criminals. The fact that various law enforcement agencies are constantly working together to bring down criminals can be discouraging.
Along with this, inter-state coordination will be a platform for sharing best and innovative models in crime prevention. Each state may have devised a successful model strategy to prevent a particular crime. By sharing these experiences we can learn many ideas from each other and follow the steps that have been successful elsewhere. This sharing of information will help in cracking the strategy of criminals. But strong leadership, effective communication and commitment are essential for interstate coordination to prevent crime, said CM Siddaramaiah.
He added that State governments should prioritize coordination by conducting joint operational taskforces, joint training programs and meetings between law enforcement agencies. I wish this conference a success. I am confident that this will be a significant step towards creating a safe environment for people. Let us all work together across borders to successfully reduce crime in South India and safeguard every citizen.
