Set against the backdrop of the mesmerising landscapes of Leh, the rally escalates the challenge to unprecedented heights, forging an indomitable spirit of exploration and camaraderie. The Taj Chandigarh event saw Governor Bandaru Dattatraya, a fervent devotee of automotive heritage, taking the helm of a vintage car.
The Himalayan Rally, poised to be an epitome of courage and determination, encapsulates the very essence of exploration, camaraderie, and the sheer thrill of the open road.
This historic rally, marking the 40th anniversary of the Nazir Hussain Memorial Drive Himalayan Rally Route, was an extravaganza featuring a convoy of 62 classic cars. Enthusiasts from diverse corners of India united for this incredible journey, which embarked from the Taj Chandigarh and charted a course to Manali, Manali to Jispa, Jispa to Leh, Leh to Pangong, Pangong to Tsokar, and Tsokar back to Manali. This daring endeavour is taken through the world’s highest motorable road to Umling-La pass perched at a breath-taking 19,300 feet above sea level.
Beyond the adrenaline rush, events like the Nazir Hussain Memorial Drive Himalayan Rally contribute substantially to the promotion of the Himalayan region’s unparalleled beauty, culture, and national unity. They also foster tourism, sportsmanship, and mutual harmony affording participants an opportunity to showcase their hidden talents.
This odyssey demands conquering five formidable high mountain passes, each offering its unique blend of adventure and beauty. Among these noteworthy passes are the formidable Rohtang La (3,978 meters), the majestic BaraLacha La (4,850 meters), the formidable Tanglang La, and the challenging Shunkula Pass. The journey also unfolds the splendors of Sonamarg and Kargil in Kashmir, alongside Hanle, before returning to the base in Manali on October 4.
This non-competitive expedition serves as a rallying point for motorsport enthusiasts united by their shared passion for adventure and speed. As participants navigate these demanding routes, they are rewarded with sweeping panoramic vistas, but they must also brace themselves for the region’s unpredictable weather conditions. Night-time temperatures plummet to as low as six degrees Celsius, with daytime averages hovering around 16 degrees Celsius.
This epic rally has attracted an eclectic mix of participants, including three classic cars manufactured between 1955 and 1996, accompanied by 61 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs).
With more than 180 individuals participating, including 55 women and 16 international entrants, meticulous attention is being paid to their health and vehicle conditions throughout the rally.
