Vallabhbhai Patel, the architect of a united India, holds a special place in the hearts of every Indian. As we celebrate his birth anniversary on October 31, 2023, it’s not just a date on the calendar; it’s a reminder of the indomitable spirit that forged our great nation.
This day, known as “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” or National Unity Day, stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of this extraordinary leader, the Iron Man of India.
Forging Unity
In 1947, when the dawn of independence broke on the Indian subcontinent, our nation was a tapestry of princely states, each with its own identity and ambitions. It was the “Iron Man of India,” Sardar Patel, who rose to the occasion, bringing together 565 princely states into the Union of India. His tireless efforts ensured that our motherland remained undivided, with one heart and one soul.
The Government of India rightfully declared Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary as “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” in 2014. It’s a day that resonates with the beating heart of our country, celebrating unity and paying homage to Patel’s relentless pursuit of national cohesion.
Upholding Patel’s Vision for India
Vallabhbhai Patel’s vision was clear: a united and prosperous nation where every citizen could live in harmony. National Unity Day allows us to rekindle the spirit of unity and resilience, reminding us how national integrity shields us from threats to our unity, integrity, and security.
Grand Celebrations: A Fitting Tribute to Our Unity
Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has paid heartfelt tribute to Sardar Patel on his birth anniversary. In a stirring message, he said, “On the Jayanti of Sardar Patel, we remember his indomitable spirit, visionary statesmanship, and the extraordinary dedication with which he shaped the destiny of our nation. His commitment to national integration continues to guide us. We are forever indebted to his service.”
On this special day, a vibrant floral tribute graces the Sardar Patel statue at Patel Chowk, Parliament Street, New Delhi. The Indian government commemorates this day with a series of events, including the “Run for Unity,” a pledge-taking ceremony, and a grand march past by our valiant police forces.
The “Run for Unity” initiative, held in cities and towns across the nation, witnesses the active participation of our youth from various educational institutions, the National Cadet Corps, and the National Service Scheme.
Strengthening India’s Borders and Geopolitical Moves
Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, our nation has witnessed remarkable transformations. Our passivity towards border security was a concern, but since 2014, the Modi government has made monumental strides in strengthening our borders.
The budget for the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has seen a fourfold increase, leading to a significant expansion of border roads. This enhanced infrastructure ensures our troops can respond swiftly, safeguarding our borders.
Furthermore, the construction of air force landing strips in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh has bolstered our preparedness. Border incursions have decreased significantly, and our response has been unwavering.
Prime Minister Modi’s geopolitical manoeuvres have not gone unnoticed. The India-Middle East-European Corridor, with support from the US and the European Union, promises to reshape the geopolitical landscape, countering China’s expansionist ambitions.
Moreover, India’s inclusion of the African Union in the G20 is set to bolster our business interests in Africa, curtailing China’s influence.
Economic Revival and Manufacturing Hub: India’s Path to Glory
India’s focused economic revival and the drive to become a global manufacturing hub are commendable. Defence exports have surged 23 times since 2014, showcasing our growth in defence production.
Our strides in manufacturing, especially in the assembly of mobile phones, are remarkable. The pursuit of becoming a semiconductor manufacturing hub holds immense promise, potentially side-lining China in this arena. Thereby gaining significant mileage in the US and European markets.
Through these comprehensive efforts, our government has effectively combated the challenges posed by China. It’s a feat that Sardar Patel would have celebrated, a united India standing strong in the face of adversity.
Sardar Patel’s Annexation of Hyderabad
Sardar Patel’s determination knew no bounds. His role in integrating 565 kingdoms with India was remarkable. However, Hyderabad posed a unique challenge, with the Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, vacillating between aligning with Pakistan or maintaining independence. The notorious Razakars, led by Qasim Rizvi, added to the turmoil.
Sardar Patel understood the urgency of the situation. Operation Polo of the Indian Army, was launched to capture Hyderabad. In a matter of five intense days, Hyderabad joined the Indian Union, ensuring the nation’s unity.
The Razakars, with their violent tactics, mirrored contemporary extremist groups. Sardar Patel’s resolute action demonstrated that India need not compromise its values when facing threats to its future.
Honouring Sardar Patel’s Legacy: A Secure Nation
In the last nine years, Prime Minister Modi’s government has taken bold measures to enhance our national security. The abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 was a historic step, quelling Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. The banning of the terror outfit PFI in 2022 and the relentless war on narco-terrorism have fortified our north-eastern states.
Diplomatically, India has undermined Pakistan’s global influence, getting them into the FATF grey list. India’s steadfast stance against Canada’s support for Khalistani groups is a new precedent in pre-empting terrorism. Additionally, India’s unequivocal condemnation of Hamas attacks on Israel as terrorism signals a shift from the old Nehruvian ideals which the Congress is still stuck with.
Seventy-three years after Sardar Patel’s passing, Prime Minister Modi’s government has honoured his legacy with a series of resolute measures to fortify our national security. It’s a testament to Sardar Patel’s enduring influence and India’s unwavering commitment to unity and security.
