What is the most common indoor plant one comes across? I would say the ‘money plant’. As a child, I of course thought that the plant would produce money which we simply have to pluck and use. Did you think the same way as a child? Brings a smile on our face, right?
But with my growing interest in plants, I learnt that it is called a money plant because it has round, flat and plump leaves, and said to bring good luck to a home.
Let us now look into other varieties of plants that can be easily grown and nurtured inside the house.
Chinese Evergreen: It is also known as Aglaonema. It is a beautiful plant with large, oval or pointed, glossy leaves, that occur on short stems. The plant grows slowly and blooms in summer and spring. They come in green, silver, white, pink and red with striped splotches or symmetrical variegation.
Spider Plant: Another name being Chlorophytum comosum. The plant grows in clumps and is a native of South Africa. The leaves of the spider plant are narrow and star shaped, growing from a central point, they may be green in colour or have white or yellow stripes. These plants look like the spider, hence the name. One of the easiest house plants to grow.
Peace Lily: These ornamental plants produce white flowers and have light fragrance. Peace Lilies are sturdy, and have glossy green oval leaves. The other name for this plant is Spathiphyllum. They have air-purifying abilities.
Snake Plant: This is a succulent also referred to as mother-in-law’s tongue. It is a native of Asia and Africa. The leaves are in the shape of a sword, some are completely green while some have stripes or blotches. Snake plants are said to have some great health benefits.
ZZ Plant: One of most low maintenance plant, with oval, wide and shiny leaves that grow upward. These plants are also called Zanzibar gems, as their leaves are spotless and waxy. They bloom during the spring, producing yellow/green/white flowers.
These are just a few of the many indoor plants that one can grow. Most of them are easy to grow and care for. Just keep in mind about the light and watering needs. More to come, stay tuned!
