In his address at the SAI20 Summit, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant emphasised the importance of adopting a balanced approach to the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) among nations. Kant highlighted that while AI presents exciting opportunities for human advancement, it also introduces new risks such as fake news, discrimination, privacy concerns, and data protection threats.
Kant emphasised the necessity for a pro-innovation attitude within a principle-based ethical framework in order to reap the benefits of AI while minimising its drawbacks. He warned against limiting innovation through overregulation, pointing out that technology will always outstrip government efforts. Kant emphasised that G20 countries should prioritise risk mitigation by putting in place early warning systems for developing risks and hazards.
Kant emphasised the importance of artificial intelligence in creating the future and acknowledged the interconnection brought about by technology. He emphasised the importance of technology in the functioning and changing of the globe, allowing for faster and more efficient information flow.
Furthermore, Kant drew attention to the detrimental impact of climate change on the oceans, resulting from pollution, unsustainable exploitation of fisheries, and disruption of marine ecosystems. He called upon the G20 to take action by developing an initiative to counter these impacts, focusing on the conservation, protection, and sustainable development of marine areas beyond national jurisdiction. To summarise, Kant envisioned a future with clean and healthy oceans for a safe Earth.
