Bengaluru: In a bid to cater to the high demand from beneficiaries, the Karnataka government has extended the opportunity for modifying Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards in select districts. This provision allows cardholders to avail themselves of benefits from the ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme. However, this moves raises concerns about the potential damage to the micro economy.
The BPL card, which has garnered increased attention since the Congress government assumed power in Karnataka, plays a pivotal role in accessing essential freebie schemes like ‘Anna Bhagya’ and ‘Gruha Lakshmi.’ Previously, the Food and Civil Supplies Department authorized BPL cardholders to make adjustments and add new names to their cards. Due to popular demand, this facility has now been extended by three more days.
This opportunity, however, is limited to districts where the demand for modifications is highest. Residents of Bagalkot, Belagavi, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Gadag, Hassan, Haveri, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysuru, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, and Vijayapura can apply for modifications on October 16, 17, and 18. For the districts of Ballari, Bidar, Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kalaburagi, Kolar, Koppal, Raichur, Ramanagara, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Yadgir, and Vijayanagara, the application window for changes is set for October 19, 20, and 21.
While these adjustments are aimed at helping the needy, the potential economic implications are worth considering. Providing freebies on a large scale, like the ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme, can lead to economic imbalances at the micro level. It can create disincentives for individuals to actively engage in economic activities when they have access to essential items through such schemes.
Applications for BPL card modifications can be made by existing cardholders at Karnataka One and Garama One centers from 10 am to 7 pm. To effect changes, cardholders must provide supporting documents. Following the submission of an application, a review process is undertaken, and if approved, a fresh card will be issued.
The government has reported that 1.12 crore women have already benefited from the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. With this extension, the numbers are expected to increase marginally.
